In September 1985 when he was fifteen-year old, he was enrolled in Shaonianban, Special
Programme for Gifted Youngsters, at Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
During the next eight years, apart from learning Chinese Medicine, including Chinese herbal
medicine, acupuncture, he also studied conventional medicine, covering physiology,
pathology, pharmacology, diagnosis, and treatment of various diseases.

Earning a Bachelor degree in July 1993, he started his practice in Haiser Hospital. During the
first three years, he gained plenty of experience by working in different sections such as
cardiovascular, digestive, endocrinological, respiratory, renal, gyneacological and surgery.

Due to particular interest in rheumatology and immunology, in July 1995, he went to teaching
hospital of Shandong University of TCM for one-year further study. Then, in September 1998,
he started his Master’s programme in Shandong University of TCM where he continued his
research on rheumatology and immunology.

Thereafter, in 2001 he entered Nanjing University of TCM working on his PhD programme. He
studied intensively with his supervisor, Professor Shi Jin, a famous expert in hepatology and
rheumatology. During his PhD programme, because of his excellent achievement, he won a
scholarship from Hongkong Qiu Shi Science and Technologies Foundation in 2003. This
foundation aims to encourage accomplished scholars and promote the development of science
and technology in China. Later he received his PhD in July 2004.

Dr Yu is also active in academic communication and volunteering campaign. During his three
years of PhD programme, there was several times when he volunteered to go to rural areas to
treat those who need medical service. In July 2002, Dr Yu, as a doctoral student, attended a
seminar in China Medical University in Taiwan, promoting the communication between TCM
professionals of Taiwan and China mainland.

Dr Yu has published over a dozen research papers in medical journals. He was one of the major
researchers in the research - treating active ankylosing spondylitis (AS) with the method of
'clearing heat resolving dampness removing blood-stasis tonifying kidney', a program which won
the third prize of Shandong Provincial Technology Progress Reward in 1999. In 2001, he also co-
edited the book 'Diagnosis and Treatment of Rheumatic Diseases with the Integration of TCM
and conventional Medicine.'

Since 2004, Dr Yu has been practicing acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine in several
areas of the UK such as Manchester, Sale Cheshire, Sheffield, London and Northern Ireland. As
a qualified practitioner, he has a wealth of experience in treating diverse health problems. In
particular, he has expertise in rheumatological, hepatological, immunological and
gynaecological diseases. Furthermore, he has achieved good result in treating hepatitis B and
C with Chinese herbal formulas. His practice combines TCM with modern approaches. Chinese
herbal medicine can be prescribed either separately or in conjunction with acupuncture
treatment.

Dr Yu is recognized as an acupuncturist and TCM practitioner by

Complementary and Alternative Practitioners which provides a service to Local GPs and
allows them to refer their patients to locally recognized Complementary and Alternative
Medicine practitioners. He is a fully insured practitioner member of the
ATCM (UK) and a
member of the Chinese Association of Acupuncture-Moxibustion. He is also a member of the
Acupuncture Fertility Network (AFN), a professional special interest group for acupuncturists
dedicated to supporting those with fertility issues.
Zuowen Yu  BSc/MBChB, MSc, PhD

Dr Yu was born in a family with a well-known Traditional Chinese
Medicine (TCM) background. His father, who has enormous
experience in healing various difficult problems, is a prestigious TCM
doctor and professor in China. Influenced by what he constantly
saw and heard, Dr Yu has had great interest in acupuncture and
Chinese herbal medicine since his childhood. Following in his
father's footsteps, his early education of traditional Chinese culture
such as Chinese Medicine, Tai Ji, Chinese calligraphy, etc. started
when he was only five years old.
